Autoimmunity
What
is Autoimmunity?
Our
bodies are designed with a very powerful system to deal with viruses, bacteria,
and parasites. This system is of
course, our immune system. Our immune
system protects us from potentially harmful substances in a very precise, effective
manner. Sometimes the immune system
malfunctions. Malfunctions can occur
due to disregulation of the immune system. When this happens, the body will attack itself. This is autoimmunity. This is becoming more and more frequent.
The
term "autoimmune disease" refers to a varied group of illnesses that
involve almost every human organ system. It includes diseases of the nervous,
gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems, as well as skin and other connective
tissues, eyes, blood and blood vessels. In all of these diseases, the
underlying problem is similar - the body's immune system becomes misdirected
and attacks the very organs it was designed to protect.
Here is the good news. Autoimmunity can be tested for and dealt with. Many times effective management of autoimmunity can greatly reduce symptoms. Other times the autoimmunity can be corrected.
Autoimmunity Facts
- 75% of autoimmune cases
are women
- The fact that women
have enhanced immune systems compared to men increases women's resistance
to many types of infection, but also makes them more susceptible to
autoimmune diseases.
- At least 10 million
Americans suffer from the more than 80 illnesses caused by autoimmunity
- Autoimmunity diseases
are among the 10 leading causes of death among women in all age groups up
to 65
- Children are being
impacted by autoimmunity more than ever.
- Autoimmunity is
thought to play a role in ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities and even Autism
- Some of the more
frequent autoimmune diseases that effect adults
- Hashimotos / Thyroid
Disease
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Type 1 Diabetes
- MS
- Lupus
- Sjogrens Syndrome
- These diseases cross
many different medical specialties, such as rheumatology, endocrinology,
hematology, neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology and dermatology.
Because such specialties usually focus on singular diseases within their
particular category, there has been virtually no general focus on
autoimmunity as the underlying cause
You can know for sure if you or a loved one is autoimmune. Specific lab tests are used to determine the diagnosis. We can literally check the immune function and detect if a person is suffering from autoimmunity. Besides determining if autoimmunity is present, we also find out what type it is. Autoimmunity is either TH1 or TH2 mediated. It is very important to the treatment protocol to get all of the specifics.
We
are pleased to be able to offer the testing and treatment protocols for those
people with autoimmunity. As soon as
the findings are revealed, we can get to work on your health challenge.
This can be life-changing
care!
